‘ENKUTATASH' - Ethiopian New Year

Enkutatash means the 'gift of jewels.' When the famous Queen of Sheba returned from her expensive jaunt to visit King Solomon in Jerusalem, her chiefs welcomed her back by replenishing her treasury with jewels. The spring festival has been celebrated since this early time, and as the rains come to their abrupt end, dancing and singing can be heard at every village in the green countryside.

Tips for communicating better with people with a disability

1. Treat people with a disability with the same respect and consideration you have for everyone else.

2. Don't assume what a person can or can't do.

3. Speak to people with a disability directly, not through their carer, assistant or interpreter.

4. Ask before you help - don't just jump in.

5. Can't understand what's being said? Don't pretend - ask again.

6. Take some time - people with some kinds of disability may take a little longer to understand and respond.

7. Some disabilities are invisible. Get to know people.

8. Guide dogs are working dogs. Never pat or speak to a guide dog while it's wearing a harness.
