Bayside Family Day Care Staff Profile

Michelle Nott has been with Bayside Family Day Care since November 2009, and as a Member of the Coordination Team is charged to provide Support Services to our Early Childhood Educators in the Redlands and surrounds.  (Previously, she coordinated Redlands Playgroup when Bayside Family Day Care operated that service).

Prior to her work with Bayside Family Day Care, Michelle was Co-Director and Pre-Prep Teacher, Holland Park Kindergarten.  She has also been a Playgroup Teacher and Group Leader for several Community Pre-Schools.

Michelle earned a 1993 Graduate Diploma in Education (Early Childhood Teaching) from the University of Queensland.  She obtained a 1992 Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Anthropology & Sociology), also at the University of Queensland.  She holds a Current Blue Card & First Aid Certificate.

In addition, Michelle has undertaken a considerable amount of professional development -- to strengthen her knowledge and skills on how play and story-telling can optimise learning outcomes for children in the early years.

Michelle has planned, created, and supported rich learning environments for children.  She has direct experience in implementing the 'Building Waterfalls' Curriculum Framework -- an approach to early years education (birth to school age) that invites children and adults to take part in a journey to realise potentials, possibilities, aspirations and inspirations.

Michelle's professional experience with this approach will soon  integrate seamlessly with Bayside Family Day Care's commitment to Emergent Curriculum principles and practice, and will help us to enact our strategy to meet the goals of the Australian Early Years Learning Framework.

Michele says:

'In my role as an educator, I adopt an Emergent Curriculum approach to learning, and this stems from the interactions between the children and adults, and is based upon shared interests and initiatives.  I draw upon a rich repertoire of pedagogical practices which include:

  • adopting an holistic approach;
  • creating physical and social learning environments that leave a positive impact on children's learning;
  • valuing the importance of play and how vital this is to a child's life -- it is essential to healthy development, and is how children learn.

I help early years educators to provide an environment in which children feel comfortable asking questions, can problem-solve and engage in critical reflection.

I encourage the children to explore their own interests and possibilities through their play and social interaction.

Personally, I believe in providing activities that do not restrict children's capacities to engage in their own learning experiences.  Children are competent, capable and resourceful contributors to their own learning.  I encourage children to develop life-skills that promote independent learning.

The adult's role is to actively encourage and support children's possibilities -- by being open to ideas, listening and valuing children, and sharing the learning process together.  By empowering children to make their own decisions, learning becomes more meaningful.'
